Diabetes is
a chronic disease and unfortunately, it is becoming more and
more common every day. There are many new cases of diabetes
reported each day and many people suffer from this disease
all over the globe. The worst part about this disease is
that there is no known cure so if you are suffering from
diabetes; chances are that you will have to fight it all
throughout your life. Your only chance is to control it with
strict diet and medication.
Similarly,
heart disease is also something that many people suffer from
and there is also no permanent cure for that. Surgery and
medications can help, but you always have to be very careful
and have to make major lifestyle changes even if you undergo
surgery for heart disease. There are many different types of
heart disease, and some types are even linked to diabetes.
In fact, many people who suffer from diabetes can end up
with heart problems.
There are
many effects of diabetes and heart disease and poor sleep is
one of them. Research has shown that patients suffering from
diabetes and heart disease have poor sleep habits and
patterns. We can see how these diseases effect sleep cycles:
A few years
ago, research was carried out which showed that people who
suffer from diabetes only sleep an average of 6 hours a day,
and they do not get the sleep they need. The ideal amount of
sleep is eight hours but diabetics are rarely able to get
that much sleep at night. As a result, the patients wake up
feeling tired and lethargic, and this weakens their immune
system. Moreover, this makes them more prone to the ill
effects of diabetes so it is a vicious circle.
Many experts
also believe that the kind of sleep disorder diabetes
experience has to do a lot of obesity and being overweight,
which is a common problem for most diabetics. If there are
fatty deposits in the throat and the nose, then it may not
allow the air to pass freely to the lungs and that can lead
to sleep apnea. People with diabetes are also more likely to
snore because of that, and that makes the quality of sleep
even worse.
In the same
way, heart disease can also lead to disturbed sleep which is
why many heart patients have poor sleep. People who suffer
from heart disease can experience difficulty in breathing in
the night which can cause them to wake up. There may be
fluid build up in the lungs which can lead to difficutly in
breathing, and so the patients keep waking up during the
night. Some evidence also shows that heart disease can lead
to sleep apnea, which is a reason for poor sleep. Moreover,
patients also experience heart pains, discomfort,
palpitations, sweating and hyper ventilation which disturbs
sleep.
This is why
people with heart disease and diabetes can often not get the
desired amount of sleep that is required for healthy
functioning of the body. |
