Pre Diabetes Symptoms

Pre Diabetes is a medical condition related to diabetes. In this condition some of the criteria for diabetes are present in patients. The blood sugar levels of such individuals dwindle between normal levels and diabetic levels. Patients are considered to have borderline diabetes and are at severe risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Normally pre diabetes is considered to be a silent condition, often having no signs or symptoms. Patients suffering from Pre diabetes show no serious symptoms until their disease develops into Type 2 diabetes or until it shows up in blood tests. Family history plays a very important role in this regard. Diabetes is considered to be a genetic disorder. So if you have a family history of diabetes, you are at a higher risk of having pre diabetes.

Pre diabetes, as mentioned earlier has no specific symptoms. However, patients suffering from prediabetes often show some signs of type 2 diabetes. These include constant hunger, weight gain or unexpected weight loss, blurred vision, slow healing process, weakness, fatigue, symptoms of flu, Loss of feeling especially in hands and feet, gum, skin, bladder or vaginal infections that constantly recur. Patients having pre diabetes might suffer from one or some of the above mentioned symptoms. Or in some cases, there might be no symptoms at all. That is why it is called a silent disease that shows itself in full force if precautions are not taken by patients.

Another major symptom of pre diabetes that is seen in most of the patients is darkeneing of certain skin areas. This condition is known as acanthosis nigricans. The knuckles, knees, armpits, neck as well as elbows of the patients suffering from pre diabetes turn darker than the normal skin tone.

Pre diabetes is caused by insulin resistance. Due to which the glucose and insulin levels of blood face imbalance. This often leads to obesity. Insulin resistance can be caused by a number of factors. These include sleep disorders, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, low level of HDL, impaired glucose levels, increase in triglyceride levels or gestational diabetes etc.

Pre diabetes is a warning sign only and the entire medical condition can be reversed with proper care and attention. It can be considered as an early stage of diabetes but it is possible to stop pre diabetes from converting into Type 2 diabetes.   Insulin resistance and obesity - the primary causes of pre diabetes can be handled effectively through a systematic life style change which includes weight loss, regular exercise as well as a nutritious but well balanced diet.

There are certain risk factors that need to be assessed thoroughly by a qualified doctor. First of all, obesity or being overweight is one of the major risk factors to watch out for. If you are inactive and do not indulge in regular exercise, are older than 45 years of age, have a family history of diabetes, suffer from high blood pressure, have polycystic ovary, gestational diabetes, low HDL or high triglyceride level, you might be suffering from pre diabetes.
